Trendy, visually minimalist Greek boutique restaurants are slowly popping up like Chantarelle mushrooms through the Adelaide lunching and dining scene these days. And that is good news. Put aside are the eat-all-you-can meat grills, souvlákia, mousakás and pastítsio filling options, and replaced by mezé dining experiences for discerning consumers, or firm yet tidy main dish options that hint at how dining in Greece – and Cyprus – should be. The latest taverna – nay, smart eatery – on the block is Somma sitting snugly in amongst Norwood’s culinary eating establishments along the Parade. Following in the footsteps of West Beach’s ‘Vasilis’ Table’ and sister to North Adelaide’s ‘Ammos’ on O’Connell Street Somma (Ammos backwards – get the idea?) is putting new edge on the cutting restaurant scene in the city and surrounds. This reviewer and Greek companions took lunch ‘on spec' at Somma and left content and smiling though a tad lighter in the pocket as Somma does command some fiscal commitment. Rents along the Norwood Parade are high after all … The ambiance – all soft wood and pastel shades assuages and smacks of meticulous planning and design. That vital first contact with staff – French-speaking for the record – was spot on and smileful. Drinks and fizzy water appeared without delay as we perused Somma’s wide-ranging menu. As it was lunch, we opted for grazing mezédhes (think tapas) that could be light, slow and yet fulfilling. The online menu lists such mezédhes and we opted for simple fare: Greek salad, octopus, red sauce meatballs, skillet grilled prawns, more-ish Cypriot grilled haloúmi cheese a tyrokafterí (chilli and cheese) dip and pitta bread. It was lunch after all, so we left the ‘larger plates’ and ‘souvláki skewers for a future dinner. The wine list is extensive though disappointingly sparse in terms of Greek wines – a couple of Thracian Lazaridis wines being the only representatives of that country’s otherwise fine wine cellars. The dishes were appetising yet, for the price, on the somewhat small side. Feta cheese seemed to appear on most of the dishes. Mmmm: yea – nah. The taste was pretty satisfying but not totally electrifying and the small size of the portions left one licking for more. The experience was pretty satisfying but not overwhelming and this reviewer is a decently-travelled Greek restaurant critic. The verdict? A relaxing and well-served lunching/dining experience with a most amenable vibe … but at a rather high price for the product. Well done Somma for an auspicious start. We look forward to an ongoing development and fine tuning of the price-product algorithm. I usually never leaver reviews on a restaurant, but what an incredible place. Everything was spot-on,the food was absolutely delicious and looking fantastic, the atmosphere was beautiful, and the service was friendly, smooth, and genuinely welcoming. But the real highlight for me was getting the chance to chat with the French chef. You can instantly tell how passionate and talented he is just from talking with him. He is incredibly knowledgeable regarding Mediterranean cuisine and he clearly master his craft. It honestly made the whole experience even more special. Couldn’t recommend this place enough.will definitely be back
We came with our family for NYE/My Grandparents 53 year wedding anniversary. The food was lovely the drinks were great the staff were so happy and helpful and they had love Greek music which was great. The family all loved it it was a great time. We will be back !
I recently took my foodie friend to Somma for a celebratory birthday lunch and it didn’t disappoint. From the friendly, smiling front of house staff who were attentive to the wine list, cocktails and the freshest modern Greek cuisine that was absolutely delicious. We ordered Tirokafteri and White Taramasalata dips served with a generous amount of pita. If you love chilli - then you’ll love the Tirokafteri. For mains we went with Magra Lamb souvlaki (served with the most tasty chips, tzatziki and pita). The lamb was flavoursome and succulent while the Fritti of local calamari was fresh and delicious. A wonderful surprise was the Somma salad! A tomato that once cut shows a Greek salad hiding within layered over whipped feta. Refreshing and no Trojan horse needed!
Dined in for lunch on their very first day and wow what a start. The Paithakia were cooked so well tender and juicy and the Somma salad was a standout fresh unique and so refreshing. The dips were dangerously good we honestly could not stop eating them. The venue itself is gorgeous warm stylish and inviting and you can tell every detail has been carefully thought through. From the food to the service to the space it all comes together so seamlessly. Such an exciting new spot and we cannot wait to come back.
